Opportunity brief
AQUA-CLEAN:
Introduction:
- AQUA-CLEAN is a sustainability-driven event challenging participants to design and build a functional water filtration model using limited and easily available materials.
- The goal is to simulate a real-world water purification problem in low-resource settings.
- The event combines innovation, awareness, and practical engineering.
Eligibility:
- Open to all Diploma, UG, and PG students from any branch or discipline from recognised colleges or universities.
- All participants must carry a valid college ID card during the event for verification.
- Failure to produce a valid college ID may lead to disqualification.
Problem Statement:
- Participants must design a water treatment system for a village of 500 people facing contaminated groundwater, unreliable electricity, limited technical expertise, limited maintenance budget, agricultural wastewater, and seasonal water availability.
- The system should produce safe water while generating minimal secondary waste.
- Participants must develop a strategy for recovering or reusing contaminants or treatment materials.
Constraints:
- No grid electricity.
- Limited transportation.
- Limited to no chemicals.
- Must be portable.
- Must be deployable quickly.
- Must treat variable contamination.
Components Required:
- Sand.
- Gravel.
- Charcoal.
- Cotton.
- Mesh/cloth.
- PET bottles or containers.
- Funnels.
- Rubber bands and plastic pipes.
- Tape/glue and other approved materials.
- Chemical filters, electrical equipment, and UV treatment are not allowed.
Rules:
- Team size: 1–3 members.
- Time limit: 2 hours to design and demonstrate the model.
- Only approved materials can be used.
- Contaminated water will be provided by the organisers.
- Final water must be visibly clear and measurable.
Judging Criteria:
- Water Clarity: 30%.
- Design Innovation: 25%.
- Material Usage: 15%.
- Presentation: 15%.
- Filtration Speed: 15%.
Rewards & Recognition:
- Exciting prizes for the Top 3 Winners.
- Certificates for all participants.
Certification Policy:
- All participants will receive certificates.
- Winners will be awarded certificates and prizes based on the final results declared by the judges.
Important Note:
- Judges' decisions will be final and binding.
- Inappropriate or unsafe behaviour will lead to disqualification.
- Use of non-approved or unsafe materials will result in penalties.
- Participants may prepare their water purification system in advance or at the venue, as per their convenience.
- Participants must report 15 minutes before the event starts.
- The organisers reserve the right to modify the rules, schedule, or any aspect of the event with prior notice.
- Participants must stay updated through official notices posted on the SLIET techFEST 2026 website.
- Further modifications to the problem statement may be made based on subsequent analysis and requirements.
