Opportunity brief
Guidelines:
- Eligibility: The event is open to undergraduate students interested in aerodynamics, aircraft design, flight mechanics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, and related fields.
- Team Size: Each team must consist of 2 members.
- Inter-College Teams: Inter-college teams are allowed. Members may belong to different colleges, subject to the organizers' registration requirements.
- Inter-Specialization Teams: Inter-specialization/branch teams are allowed and encouraged. Students from Mechanical, Aerospace, Aeronautical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics, and other relevant disciplines may participate together.
- Event Type: Hands-on, design-and-build glider competition.
- Number of Problem Statements: The competition consists of one primary design challenge—designing and building a non-RC, passively stable glider that performs effectively under standardized launch conditions.
- Duration: The event duration is 3 hours.
- Event Date: Glide-X is scheduled during 14–16 October 2026, with the official schedule placing it on 16 October, 9:00 AM–12:00 PM.
- Venue: Ramaiah Technology Campus, Bengaluru.
- Registration: Registration requires organizer approval. The registration fee is ₹200 per team and is paid online by the team lead.
- Glider Type: Participants must design and build a non-RC, passively stable glider.
- Objective: Teams should optimize their glider for flight time and distance while maintaining a straight and stable flight path.
- Launch Conditions: Gliders will be tested under standardized launch conditions.
- Launcher: A common mechanical launcher may be provided/used for launches. Its use is optional as specified by the organizers.
- Design Focus: Participants are expected to apply principles of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, aircraft stability, weight distribution, and structural design.
- Evaluation: Performance will be assessed based on the glider's flight performance, stability, distance/time achieved, design efficiency, and adherence to the competition requirements.
- Prizes: 1st – ₹10,000; 2nd – ₹7,000; 3rd – ₹5,000.
Rules:
- Each team must consist of exactly 2 registered participants.
- Each team may submit/operate one glider design, unless otherwise specified by the organizers.
- The glider must be non-RC and passively stable. Powered or remotely controlled aircraft are not permitted.
- The glider must be designed and constructed by the participating team.
- Teams must complete their design and construction within the allotted 3-hour event duration, unless materials or construction time are specifically provided beforehand by the organizers.
- The glider must comply with all size, weight, material, and safety restrictions specified by the event coordinators/rulebook.
- Participants must follow the standardized launch procedure provided by the organizers.
- If a common mechanical launcher is provided, teams must use it according to the instructions given by the organizers.
- Teams must ensure that their glider maintains a stable and controlled flight path. Unsafe or deliberately uncontrolled launches are not permitted.
- Participants must not use any external propulsion system, motor, engine, or remote-control mechanism unless explicitly permitted in the official rulebook.
- Teams must not interfere with another team's glider, equipment, launch area, or workspace.
- Participants may make design modifications only within the time and material limitations specified by the organizers.
- Any form of cheating, copying another team's design during the competition, unauthorized assistance, or deliberate rule violation may result in disqualification.
- Participants must handle tools, materials, and launch equipment safely and follow all instructions given by event coordinators.
- Any intentional damage to event equipment or venue property may result in disqualification and/or recovery of the associated cost.
- Judges/coordinators may inspect gliders before testing to verify compliance with the event requirements.
- A glider that fails to meet mandatory technical or safety requirements may be disqualified from the corresponding flight attempt.
- In case of a tie, the organizers may use additional performance parameters or a tie-breaker flight as required.
- The judges' decision regarding flight validity, rule violations, scoring, and final rankings will be final.
- Participants must maintain proper conduct and follow the instructions of organizers, judges, and volunteers throughout the event.
