Opportunity brief

Guidelines:

  • Eligibility: Open to undergraduate students interested in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Design, CAD/CAE, Structural Engineering, and related engineering disciplines.
  • Team Size: Each team must consist of 3–4 members.
  • Inter-College Teams: Inter-college teams are allowed, subject to registration and organizer approval.
  • Inter-Specialization Teams: Inter-specialization/branch teams are allowed and encouraged. Students from Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, and other relevant disciplines may participate together.
  • Event Type: Team-based engineering design, simulation, optimization, and 3D-printing challenge.
  • Number of Problem Statements: The event consists of one primary design problem statement involving the design of a mechanical bracket according to specified requirements.
  • Duration: The competition duration is 3 hours.
  • Maximum Capacity: 15 teams.
  • Design Requirements: Teams will be provided with specific design requirements, loading conditions, dimensional constraints, and material specifications.
  • Design Process: Teams must develop their own alternative bracket design based on the given constraints.
  • Engineering Analysis: Participants are expected to use engineering calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to validate their design.
  • FEA Objective: The analysis should be used to identify stress concentrations, possible failure regions, and structural performance.
  • Optimization: Teams should optimize the design to achieve better strength with minimum material usage.
  • 3D Printing: The final/selected design will be prepared for 3D printing as part of the competition.
  • Evaluation: Designs will be evaluated based on structural performance, design efficiency, material utilization, FEA results, manufacturability, and adherence to the given constraints.
  • Registration: Registration requires organizer approval. The registration fee is ₹200 per team, paid online by the team lead.
  • Capacity: Only 15 teams can participate, so registration is subject to availability.
  • Prizes: 1st Prize – ₹7,000; 2nd Prize – ₹5,000.

Rules:

  • Each team must consist of 3–4 registered members.
  • Teams must work on the design problem provided by the organizers.
  • All designs must satisfy the specified dimensional, loading, and material constraints.
  • Teams must develop their own original design and must not copy another team's design.
  • Engineering calculations must be performed to justify the proposed design.
  • Teams must use FEA/simulation to evaluate the structural behavior of their design.
  • The FEA should be used to identify stress concentration areas and potential failure points.
  • Teams should optimize their design for high strength with minimum material usage.
  • Designs that violate the specified dimensions, material requirements, or loading conditions may be rejected.
  • The final design must be suitable for the specified 3D-printing process.
  • Teams must submit their design within the allotted 3-hour duration.
  • Any modification after the submission deadline will require approval from the event coordinators.
  • Teams must use only the software, tools, materials, and resources permitted by the organizers.
  • Participants must not interfere with another team's design, workstation, files, equipment, or materials.
  • Collaboration is permitted within the registered team, but unauthorized assistance from other teams is not allowed.
  • Plagiarism, copying, design theft, manipulation of simulation results, or any other unfair practice may result in disqualification.
  • Participants must follow all safety instructions while operating computers, 3D printers, tools, and other equipment.
  • Any intentional damage to event equipment or venue property may result in disqualification and/or recovery of the associated cost.
  • Teams must maintain proper conduct and follow instructions from judges, coordinators, and volunteers.
  • In case of a tie, the organizers may use factors such as strength-to-weight ratio, material efficiency, FEA performance, or design quality as tie-break criteria.
  • The judges' decision regarding design evaluation, simulation results, rule violations, penalties, and final results will be final and binding.
