Opportunity brief

Overview

Think Strategically. Bid Wisely. Build Solutions.

Can you solve a state's most pressing challenges with limited resources, strategic decisions, and economic reasoning?

State Craft Challenge is an economics-based case competition that puts participants in the role of policymakers responsible for addressing real-world challenges faced by Indian states. From managing resource constraints to making strategic investments, teams must think critically, allocate resources efficiently, and develop practical solutions under a limited budget.

The competition combines economic knowledge, case-study analysis, auction-based resource allocation, teamwork, and presentation skills in an engaging simulation of policymaking.

Structure

Round 1: The Economics Quiz

Format: Online Quiz | Elimination Round

  • The competition begins with an economics quiz designed to test participants' understanding of economic concepts, current affairs, and their practical applications.
  • Participants will be assessed on their conceptual clarity, analytical thinking, and ability to connect economic principles with real-world situations.
  • Objective: Identify the 12 qualifying teams that advance to the next round.

Round 2: The State Challenge

Format: Case Study + Resource Auction + Presentation

  • The 12 qualifying teams will enter the main competition, where each team will be assigned an Indian state through a chit-based allocation system.
  • Each team will receive a case study outlining a specific problem faced by its assigned state. The challenge could involve issues such as unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, agricultural distress, water scarcity, industrial development, or other socioeconomic concerns.
  • Teams must analyse their case, identify the key challenges, and determine which resources are essential to developing an effective solution.

The Resource Auction

  • Participants will then compete in an auction to acquire the resources required to address their state's challenges. Working within a limited budget, teams must decide which resources to prioritise, how much to bid, and how to allocate their available funds efficiently.
  • The auction will test strategic thinking, resource management, decision-making, and the ability to balance competing priorities.

The Solution Presentation

  • After the auction, each team will present its proposed solution, explaining how the resources acquired will be used to address the assigned problem.
  • Teams should demonstrate the feasibility of their recommendations, justify their resource allocation decisions, and explain the expected economic and social impact on their state.

Prizes
