Opportunity brief

Overview

Negotiate. Strategise. Shape the Global Economy.

What if you were responsible for running an entire country's economy? Could you manage scarce resources, navigate global crises, negotiate trade deals, and secure economic growth while protecting your nation's interests?

EconoNations is an economics-based simulation competition that places participants in the role of national policymakers navigating an interconnected global economy. Through strategic resource trading, negotiations, and responses to changing global developments, teams must make decisions that shape their country's economic performance and long-term prospects.

The competition combines economic reasoning, international trade, resource management, geopolitical strategy, and decision-making in a dynamic simulation of the global economy.

Structure

Round 1: The Economics Quiz

Format: Quiz | Elimination Round

  • The competition begins with an economics quiz designed to test participants' understanding of economic concepts, international trade, global affairs, and their real-world applications.
  • Participants will be assessed on their conceptual clarity, analytical thinking, and awareness of the economic forces shaping the world.
  • Objective: Shortlist the 12 qualifying teams that advance to the next stage.

Round 2: Nation Allocation and Economic Setup

Format: Country Allocation | Strategy Formation

  • The 12 qualifying teams will be assigned countries through a random allocation process. Each team will represent its assigned nation and receive an initial economic profile consisting of resources, financial capacity, and other economic strengths and limitations.
  • Teams must study their country's starting position, identify its comparative advantages and dependencies, and formulate an initial strategy for navigating the global economy.

Round 3: The Global News Simulation

Format: Three News Rounds | Negotiation and Resource Trading

  • This is the core of EconoNations.
  • Across three rounds, teams will respond to changing global developments that influence resource availability, market demand, trade relations, and economic priorities.
  • Each round will introduce a new news event or global economic situation. Teams must interpret its implications, identify the resources and economic relationships that become more important, and negotiate with other countries to secure their national interests.
  • During each round, teams will have a limited period to negotiate trade deals, exchange resources, manage their financial capacity, and adapt their strategies to the evolving global environment.
  • Every decision carries consequences. A resource that seems less valuable today may become essential tomorrow, while excessive dependence on another country could leave a nation vulnerable to sudden disruptions.
  • Objective: Build a resilient and competitive economy through strategic negotiation, efficient resource allocation, and the ability to adapt to changing global conditions.

Final Round: The Future of Nations

Format: Strategic Presentation | 4 Minutes per Team

  • The final round moves beyond immediate trading decisions and challenges teams to think about the future of their economies.
  • Each team will deliver a four-minute presentation outlining its country's future economic strategy, based on the position it has built throughout the simulation.
  • Teams should explain how they intend to utilise their available resources, develop economic opportunities, establish strategic international relationships, and strengthen their country's long-term economic prospects.
  • The presentation should demonstrate forward-thinking economic reasoning, a clear understanding of resource interdependence, and the ability to connect present decisions with future outcomes.
  • Objective: Evaluate each team's long-term vision, strategic thinking, and understanding of how resource management and international economic relationships can shape national development.
