Opportunity brief

About the Event

RoboRace (RC Racing) is a high-speed terrestrial robotics competition where custom-built, remote-controlled rovers navigate a challenging multi-terrain obstacle track. The event tests mechanical engineering, electronic durability, vehicle stability, and precision driving under time pressure. Participants must overcome obstacles such as ramps, gravel, sand traps, speed bumps, steep inclines, slippery surfaces, and tight turns. Teams must optimize torque, speed, centre of gravity, and chassis ground clearance to achieve the fastest clean run without stalling, flipping, or violating track boundaries.

Date: 31/10/2026

Time: To be announced soon

Event Format & Structure

Phase 1: Technical Inspection & Safety Check

  • Robots will undergo dimensional, weight, and power supply inspections to ensure compliance with the event's safety standards.
  • Battery voltage and other hardware specifications will be verified.
  • Wireless communication systems and transmitter frequencies will be checked to prevent radio interference.

Phase 2: Time Trials (Qualifying Round)

  • Each rover will complete an individual timed run on the arena track.
  • Performance will be evaluated based on lap time, obstacle navigation, and applicable penalties.
  • The fastest rovers with the best penalty-adjusted performances will qualify for the final elimination rounds.

Phase 3: Head-to-Head Heats (Knockout Finals)

  • Qualified teams will compete in head-to-head knockout races or advanced timed circuits.
  • Teams must demonstrate speed, control, and obstacle-handling capabilities to advance through the rounds.
  • The final rounds will determine the overall winners.

Eligibility & Team Rules

  • Target Audience: Open to undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma students from technical institutions, as well as school students.
  • Team Size: 2–4 members per team.
  • Cross-Institution Participation: Permitted.
  • Inter-Departmental Participation: Permitted.

Bot Specifications

  • Control System: Robots must be remotely controlled using compatible RF transmitters (2.4 GHz recommended), Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.
  • Power Supply: Onboard electric battery power only, subject to the maximum voltage limits specified in the official rulebook.
  • Prohibited Propulsion: Internal combustion engines and pneumatic propulsion systems are strictly prohibited.
  • Size & Weight: Robots must comply with the prescribed dimensional and weight limits, such as a maximum footprint of 30 cm × 30 cm × 30 cm and a maximum weight of 5 kg, including the battery.

Rules & Guidelines

  • Arena Constraints: The track may include sand traps, speed bumps, inclined ramps, slippery surfaces, gravel, and sharp hairpin turns.
  • Pilot Control: Operators must control their vehicles from the designated pilot booth.
  • No Physical Contact: Physical contact with the robot is prohibited during an active heat.
  • Pits & Restarts: If a robot flips, stalls, or goes off-track, a designated team member may perform a manual reset after referee approval. Standard time penalties will apply.
  • Fair Play: Intentional ramming, disabling competitor robots, or deliberately damaging arena obstacles will result in heat forfeiture or event disqualification.
  • Safety Compliance: All robots must adhere to the prescribed electrical, mechanical, and operational safety requirements.
  • Final Authority: Referee decisions regarding track boundaries, lap times, penalties, and rule violations will be final and binding.

Evaluation & Scoring Criteria

  • Track Elapsed Time: Total time taken to complete the designated number of laps from start to finish.
  • Penalty Time: Additional time incurred for boundary violations, skipping obstacles, or requesting manual resets and restarts.
  • Obstacle Navigation: Performance in negotiating challenging terrain and completing track sections successfully.
  • Bonus Points: Awarded for executing designated technical manoeuvres or completing difficult track modules cleanly.
  • Final Lap Time: Calculated using the official event scoring rules, incorporating track time and applicable penalties.Final Lap Time = Track Time + Penalty Time

Rewards & Perks

  • Cash Prizes & Trophies: Awarded to the top 3 teams.
  • Certificates of Merit: Awarded to the top-performing drivers and winning teams.
  • Certificates of Participation: Awarded to all valid competing teams.
