Opportunity brief
About the Event
Bridgeathon is an engineering design and construction challenge that tests structural ingenuity, creative problem-solving, and practical physics skills. Teams must design and construct a miniature bridge using the materials provided, adhering to specified dimensions. The primary objective is to achieve the highest strength-to-weight ratio by balancing structural efficiency, material usage, and design aesthetics. Put your engineering skills to the test and discover how much load your bridge can withstand before failure!
Date: 1/11/2026
Time: To be announced soon
Event Format & Structure
Phase 1: Construction & Inspection
- Teams will be provided with standard construction materials, such as popsicle sticks or balsa wood, along with adhesive.
- Bridges must be constructed within the allotted time and adhere to the specified length, width, and height limits.
- Completed bridges will undergo dimensional verification and weight measurement before testing.
Phase 2: Load Testing & Evaluation
- Bridges will be tested using a designated load-testing apparatus.
- Load will be applied incrementally at the center of each bridge until structural failure or collapse.
- The maximum load sustained by each bridge will be recorded.
- The final performance will primarily be evaluated based on the ratio of maximum load supported to the bridge's own weight.
Eligibility & Team Rules
- Target Audience: Open to undergraduate, postgraduate, and school students from all disciplines.
- Team Size: 2–4 members per team.
- Cross-Institution Teams: Participants from different colleges or institutions are allowed.
- Materials & Equipment: Basic construction materials and testing apparatus will be provided at the venue.
- Tools: The use of secondary tools, such as cutters, rulers, and markers, will be subject to the guidelines announced before the event.
Rules & Guidelines
- Material Usage: Only materials provided by the organizers may be used to construct the bridge. External adhesives and unauthorized structural reinforcements are strictly prohibited.
- Dimensional Constraints: All bridges must comply with the specified span, width, and height limits. Non-compliant structures may incur point deductions or disqualification.
- Testing Protocol: Load will be applied gradually at the center of the bridge. The maximum load sustained before structural failure or collapse will be recorded.
- Fair Play: Chemically treating, modifying, or otherwise altering the structural properties of the provided materials outside the permitted event guidelines will result in immediate disqualification.
- Decision Authority: The decisions of the judges and organizing committee will be final and binding.
Evaluation & Scoring Criteria
- Strength-to-Weight Ratio (Primary Criterion): Calculated as the maximum load supported divided by the self-weight of the bridge.Efficiency Ratio (E) = Maximum Load Capacity (kg) / Self-Weight of Bridge (kg)
- Design & Aesthetics: Structural neatness, symmetry, innovation, and overall design quality.
- Adherence to Constraints: Compliance with the specified dimensions, material restrictions, and event rules.
Rewards & Perks
- Cash Prizes & Trophies: Exciting rewards for the top 3 winning teams.
- Certificates of Merit: Awarded to the winners.
- Certificates of Participation: Provided to all valid competing teams.
Design smart. Build strong. Maximize efficiency. Let your bridge stand the test of load and time!
