Opportunity brief
Introduction
Fitting Edge: The Case Challenge 2026 is a strategy-led case competition by the BirlaNu (CKA Birla Group) in association with the Entrepreneurship Cell, IIM Calcutta. Built around the theme "Reimagining the Future of Indian Spaces", it puts participants in front of a live commercial question from one of the fastest-evolving corners of the home and building ecosystem.
Polymer and composite bath fittings — taps, mixers, showers, valves, health faucets, seat covers, connection tubes and allied accessories — are emerging as a new alternative to conventional brass and chrome. The central question: is this a structural shift or a price-tier niche, and where should a player focus first to build a profitable business?
Teams must move beyond broad ideas to a decision-grade recommendation: what should be the market entry strategy, which markets and sub-categories to lead with, what product and proposition will win in India, and how to translate that into measurable, sustainable growth.
The Challenge — Core Questions
The final brief defines the precise scope; indicatively, strong teams will form a view on:
- Is polymer bathware a genuine substitute for brass/chrome, or a distinct value-tier niche — and how does the answer change by geography?
- Which polymers, composites, coatings and cartridge technologies are winning globally, and why?
- How does regulatory complexity (plumbing codes, water-contact safety, water-efficiency mandates) vary by market, and what does it mean for entry sequencing?
- Who are the credible global and regional competitors, and how are they positioned on price, design, durability and distribution?
- What should the differentiated India offering be (material + design + proposition), and which global players/products are worth benchmarking or exploring as tie-up partners?
- What is the category share and price/quality benchmark across sub-categories (taps, health faucets, connection tubes, seat covers), including the full-turn vs quarter-turn tap split?
- What phased go-to-market roadmap builds a profitable business over ~3 years, and what STP and business model get there?
- Can the portfolio be positioned as a total water-management solution alongside water tanks?
Scope
Geographies (indicative clusters): India (home market; BIS norms; affordable-housing linkage; price sensitivity), APAC ex-India, Middle East, Europe, United Kingdom (WRAS) and the United States (NSF/ANSI 61, ASME).
Sub-categories: taps & mixers, showers, faucets, valves, health faucets and bathroom accessories.
Analytical lenses: market structure & demand, materials & design, regulatory & standards, competitive landscape, distribution & channel, consumer behaviour, SWOT, opportunity sizing, risk & mitigation, sustainability & ESG, and the GTM roadmap. Standard frameworks (Porter's Five Forces, PESTEL, SWOT/TOWS, Ansoff, a scoring rubric) are welcome where they add rigour.
Out of scope: ceramic sanitaryware (except as cross-sell context), the full chrome/brass category (except as benchmark), plant/capex modelling, and pipes & fittings (except direct compatibility). Identifying potential partners is in scope; costing a JV is not.
