About the Event:

The Arduino Uno is an open-source microcontroller board based on the Microchip ATmega328P, widely used for building interactive electronic systems. It features 14 digital input/output pins, 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz clock, and a USB interface, making it easy to connect with various sensors and actuators. In embedded automation projects like smart dustbins, the Arduino Uno acts as the central control unit-processing data from proximity and moisture sensors to operate servo motors for automatic lid opening and waste segregation. Its user-friendly ecosystem, affordability, and extensive community support make it an ideal choice for rapid hardware prototyping.

Objective:

  • To encourage practical application of embedded-system concepts.
  • To develop solutions for real-world student-related problems.
  • To test sensor interfacing and microcontroller programming skills.
  • To encourage efficient real-time data processing and decision-making.
  • To promote creativity and hardware-software co-design.
  • To develop participants' ability to plan and implement a solution within a defined problem statement.

Problem Statement:

Improper segregation of wet and dry waste at the source makes waste management, recycling, and disposal difficult. People often fail to dispose of waste into its respective dustbin due to negligence or lack of awareness. The proposed project aims to develop an Arduino-based smart dustbins that automatically opens when waste is detected, identifies the waste category using sensors, and directs compatible waste to the appropriate compartment. Non-compatible waste is automatically rejected, reducing contamination and eliminating the need for manual segregation.

Event Structure:

Stage 1 – Ideation & Problem Validation:

Teams identify a real-world problem and define their proposed solution, target users, and value proposition.

Stage 2 – Final Presentation & Evaluation:

Teams demonstrate their working prototype and present their technical architecture, implementation, and solution.

The final presentation consists of a 10-minute pitch followed by 5 minutes of Q&A with the judging panel.

Rules and Regulations:

-  Working Hardware Required: The solution must be a physical, fully functional hardware model with no simulations allowed. - Detection & Automation: The system must detect both wet and dry waste and open automatically upon waste detection. - Equipment Responsibility: The team must bring their own components, tools, and laptops. - Evaluation Criteria: Evaluation will be strictly based on innovation, functionality, and user experience.

  • Teams may consist of 2–4 members.
  • Participants must carry a valid student ID.
  • The final implementation must be based on the given problem statement.
  • The solution must be original and developed by the participating team.
  • Participants may use only the components and sensors permitted by the organisers.
  • All physical hardware must be low-voltage and electrically safe.
  • Simulation software may be used if permitted by the organisers.
  • Participants must demonstrate real-time functionality of their solution.
  • Any form of plagiarism or copied implementation may result in disqualification.
  • Misbehaviour may result in disqualification. The coordinators' decision will be final.

Components Required:

  • Microcontroller: Arduino Uno (or Nano)
  • Proximity Sensor: Ultrasonic Sensor (HC-SR04) for motion/waste detection to open

lid - Moisture/Wetness Sensor: Raindrop Sensor or Soil Moisture Sensor (to detect wet waste)

  • Dry/Material Sensor: Inductive Proximity / Capacitive Sensor or Infrared (IR) Sensor
  • Actuators: Servo Motors (for opening the lid and driving the waste-sorting

mechanism/flap) - Power Supply: 9V/12V Power Adapter or Li-ion Battery pack Chassis & Structure: Dustbin frame with dual compartments (wet/dry), cardboard/ acrylic sheets, and connecting wires/breadboard

Judging Criteria:

  • Problem Understanding & Relevance – 20%
  • Functionality & Accuracy – 30%
  • Real-Time Response – 20%
  • Embedded Design & Technical Implementation – 15%
  • Innovation & User Experience – 10%
  • Presentation & Demonstration – 5%

Judge's Decision is Final:

The judges' decision will be final and will be based on the specified judging criteria, technical correctness, and overall performance.

Eligibility:

  • Open to students from recognised colleges/universities.
  • Participation is allowed in teams of 1–4 members.
  • Valid student ID is mandatory.

Certification Policy:

  • Certificates will be provided to all participants.
  • Certificate of Excellence will be awarded to winners as per judges' results.
