Opportunity brief
THE OUTPOST
One Problem. One Builder. Six Hours.
THE OUTPOST is a 6-hour, fully online, individual frontend development hackathon organized by Frontend Arena, designed to challenge participants to turn creative ideas into functional, visually impressive, and user-friendly web experiences.
Inspired by the spirit of exploration, strategy, and teamwork-free individual competition, THE OUTPOST gives every participant the opportunity to showcase their frontend development skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities through a time-bound coding mission.
Participants will receive a problem statement at the beginning of the hackathon and must independently design, develop, test, and submit their solution within the allotted six hours.
This is an individual competition. Every participant builds their own project, submits their solution, and competes against other participants based on the quality of their implementation.
Hackathon Format
Duration: 6 Hours
Mode: Fully Online
Participation: Individual
Domain: Frontend Web Development
Challenge Format: Problem Statement-Based
Participation Fee: Completely Free
Evaluation: Defined Hackathon Evaluation Criteria
Competition: Individual Project Submission
Participants will receive the challenge at the beginning of the event and will have six hours to understand the requirements, plan their approach, build the application, test its functionality, and refine the final experience before submission.
The Frontend Mission
THE OUTPOST focuses on building modern, interactive, and visually polished web applications.
Participants must transform the given problem statement into a working frontend solution that demonstrates creativity, usability, functionality, and strong design decisions.
The goal is not simply to create a webpage. Participants should build an experience that solves the given problem while demonstrating their ability to make effective technical and design decisions under time constraints.
Modern Technology Requirement
THE OUTPOST is designed around modern frontend development practices.
Participants are required to use a modern frontend framework, library, or technology stack to build their projects.
Examples of acceptable technologies include:
-
React
-
Next.js
-
Vue
-
Nuxt
-
Svelte
-
SvelteKit
-
Angular
-
Astro
-
Remix
-
TypeScript
- Tailwind CSS and modern styling frameworks - Modern UI and component libraries - Animation and interaction libraries such as Framer Motion - Other suitable modern frontend technologies
Participants may choose the technology stack that best suits their solution, provided it meets the hackathon requirements.
Standalone Technologies Are Not Permitted as the Primary Stack
The following are not permitted as the primary project stack:
- Raw HTML-only projects - Raw CSS-only projects - Vanilla JavaScript-only projects - Static HTML/CSS/JavaScript websites without a modern framework or technology stack
HTML, CSS, and JavaScript may naturally be used within modern frameworks, but the project must be built using a suitable modern frontend stack.
Vibe Coding and AI-Assisted Development
Participants may use modern development tools to accelerate their workflow and improve productivity.
Permitted tools and resources include:
- AI coding assistants - Vibe Coding platforms - Code editors and development environments - UI design and prototyping tools - Component libraries and design systems - Animation and interaction libraries - Public documentation and learning resources - Debugging and testing tools - Other relevant frontend development tools
Participants are responsible for understanding, testing, and validating the code they submit. The use of AI tools does not replace the need for a functional, well-designed, and technically sound solution.
Evaluation Criteria
Submissions will be evaluated using the following criteria:
1. UI/UX Design and Visual Quality
Visual consistency, layout, typography, spacing, usability, and overall presentation.
2. Functionality
Working interactions, navigation, core features, and implementation of the required functionality.
3. Creativity and Innovation
Original ideas, thoughtful design choices, and creative approaches to solving the problem.
4. Problem Statement Alignment
How effectively the project addresses the given challenge and fulfills its requirements.
5. Code Quality and Technical Implementation
Code structure, maintainability, appropriate use of technologies, and overall implementation quality.
6. Responsiveness and Accessibility
Usability across different screen sizes, responsive layouts, and attention to accessibility.
The final evaluation will follow the official criteria and scoring framework announced by the organizers.
