Opportunity brief

About the Event:

DataVerse is a data-driven detective challenge where participating teams step into the shoes of investigators tackling a fictional case rooted in real-world Data-for-Earth problems. Across three progressive rounds, participants must spot misleading data, analyze complex datasets, deliver calibrated estimates, and defend their analytical conclusions before a panel of judges.

Round Wise Details:

Round 1: Spot the Lie

  • Format: Offline, paper-based analytical investigation.
  • Mechanism: Teams are provided with a physical case file containing data points, visualizations, and claims. Without requiring prior Data Science knowledge, participants must critically analyze the material to uncover hidden flaws, misrepresentations, and misleading data points.

Round 2: The Data Room

  • Format: Hands-on dataset investigation.
  • Mechanism: Shortlisted teams work directly with provided datasets and CSV files. Participants analyze the raw data, derive key insights, submit a numerical/evidence-based estimate along with an assigned confidence level, and document their analytical methodology within the allotted time.

Round 3: The Defense

  • Format: Live presentation & cross-examination.
  • Mechanism: Finalist teams present their analysis and defend their methodology before the judging panel. Following the presentations, the Ground Truth is officially revealed.

Rules and Guidelines:

  • Eligibility: Open to students from all B.Tech branches and academic years.
  • Team Size: Teams must consist of 2 to 3 members.
  • Data Integrity & Fair Play:
  • Participants must rely strictly on the provided datasets and materials.
  • Manipulation, misrepresentation, fabrication of evidence, or external unfair assistance is strictly prohibited and will lead to immediate disqualification.
  • Punctuality & Submissions: All entries and analytical write-ups must be submitted within the specified time limits for each round.
  • Evaluation Criteria:
  • Performance across all rounds contributes to final rankings.
  • Key parameters include accuracy, evidence-based reasoning, soundness of analytical method, confidence calibration, data relevance, and clarity under defense.
  • Final Authority: The decision of the organizers and judging panel is final and non-contestable.
